Malaysian Market Review. The FBM KLCI was fell marginally by 1.50 points, or 0.09%, to close at 1,725.89. Market breadth remained negative, with 625 losers against 559 gainers, while 548 counters were unchanged. The muted performance was attributed to geopolitical risks remaining as the dominant near-term variable. Sector-wise, Telco (+1.20%), Utilities (+0.88%), and Construction (+0.65%) were the main gainers while Property (-0.51%) and Finance (-0.42%) were the main laggards.
Global Markets: The S&P 500 declined 0.52% to 7,745.06, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.32% to 26,644.91. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.51%, to 53,459.78. Overall, investors turned more cautious ahead of major U.S. retail earnings and as renewed geopolitical concerns alleviated oil prices after Iran and the U.S. ruled out an extension of the MOU signed in June to end the conflict (Reuters, CNBC). According to Reuters, Iran has decided to shift their policy to appear more aggressive, citing an unnamed Iranian official that stated a move in Iranian policy towards a ‘fully offensive one.’ Meanwhile, President Trump had informed reporters that he would not seek to extend the ceasefire with Iran. The pan-European STOXX 600 fell 0.22% to 656.41 with European sentiment becoming more cautious after a strong earnings-driven run due to Middle-East developments. In Asia, markets closed positively before the recent Middle-east developments evolved, with Japan's Nikkei 225 advancing 0.74% and the Shenzhen Index rising 2.44%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 1.34%.
Market Outlook. The immediate market environment remains cautious rather than outright bearish. Malaysia continues to have pockets of relative strength, but external risks are likely to dictate short-term sentiment. The most constructive scenario would be stabilising oil prices, no further escalation in the Middle East, resilient U.S. consumer earnings and softer bond yields. This combination could encourage investors to move back into risk assets and provide room for the KLCI to recover. The key downside scenario would be a further escalation in U.S.-Iran tensions accompanied by another surge in crude oil and bond yields, particularly if U.S. retail earnings simultaneously signal weaker consumer demand. Such a combination would intensify concerns over slower growth and persistent inflation and could keep investors defensive. For now, we expect investors to favour selective stock-picking over broad market exposure, with attention centred on domestic defensives, construction, selected energy names and technology counters supported by semiconductor demand, while keeping a close watch on financial heavyweights for signals on the KLCI's broader direction.
Sector focus. Telco and Utilities are expected to remain relatively resilient as investors favour defensive sectors amid heightened geopolitical and global growth uncertainty. Overall, sector performance is likely to stay selective, with investors favouring counters with stronger earnings visibility and defensive characteristics.
Technical Commentary: The FBM KLCI closed at 1,725.89. The index remains above its 20-day and 120-day moving averages, while its failure to hold above the 9-day moving average suggests that near-term momentum has weakened. Repeated rejections near the 1,750-1,760 zone suggest sellers are firmly defending this resistance level. A break below 1,720 would open the door to a deeper pullback towards the 1,700 support, with 1,680 the next line of defence should profit-taking accelerate. The outlook will only become more positive if the index clearly breaks above the 1,750 level.
